Exfoliating – the benefits of a sugar scrub

Aequora’s Exfoliating Body Scrub

There’s nothing more luxurious than scooping out a handful of golden, organic ‘sugariness’ dripping in decadent and skin nourishing oils.   Oils that include Sweet Almond Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil and Coconut Oil all bathed in our signature natural essential oil blend.  Exfoliation is a crucial step in your skincare routine and here, we explain why and the do’s and don’ts!

So, what’s the deal with exfoliating and the all-important question… how often should we exfoliate?

Avoid the ‘nasties’!

In this instance, our focus is on body scrubs and the benefits and the cautions.  Obviously, as a natural and organic skincare brand we won’t even mention scrubs that don’t fall into this category.  Just be aware though that many body scrubs available on the high street can contain nasty ingredients that are far from beneficial to our skin and far from natural.  Instead, they can contain ingredients that cause irritation and strip the skin of it’s natural oils and let’s not even get into micro beads!  These nasties cause so much damage which you can read more about here. https://www.environment.gov.au/protection/waste-resource-recovery/plastics-and-packaging/plastic-microbeads

Why exfoliate?

The purpose of exfoliation is to remove the dead skin cells and help unclog pores which can become clogged with the build-up of regular use of lotions and  sunscreens etc.  Exfoliating helps unclog the pores and generates cellular renewal which in turn leads to a smoother and softer skin.

Why did we choose a sugar scrub?

Our Exfoliating Body Scrub is a sugar scrub and this gentle abrasion helps remove dry and flaking skin often caused by environmental conditions. Sugar is a natural humectant meaning it helps retain moisture in your skin, resulting in your skin staying hydrated.  Sugar also dissolves upon contact with water making it ideal for sensitive, delicate skin as it is not a harsh or over abrasive scrub.

The organic Sucrose contained in our sugar scrub is a natural source of Glycolic Acid, also known as an AHA. Glycolic acid is so small, it can get deeper into your skin where it stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis to produce increased amounts of collagen which, in turn, helps skin feel firmer and minimises fine lines and wrinkles.

You will notice as soon as you step out of your steamy shower or that long anticipated soak in the tub that your skin will feel smoother and look more radiant and even-toned.

Don’t over exfoliate

But…what do you mean ‘but’?!

Well, there is a but …. Sugar scrubs shouldn’t be part of your daily beauty routine. Over-exfoliating can irritate your skin so you should aim to use a sugar scrub no more than three times a week at the most.

Never use a sugar scrub on skin that’s damaged, including sunburn or highly sensitive skin – always allow damaged skin to heal gently and naturally with the use of topical creams or oils without any exfoliants in.

We often get asked if our Exfoliating Body Scrub is suitable for facial skin – in a word, no.  Although  sugar scrubs are gentle enough  for your body, they are too harsh for use on your face and there is a possibility they could lead to irritation.  ‘No’ to the face but a big ‘hell yes’ for your body!

More benefits

Another fabulous benefit of exfoliating is that it optimises the penetration of other skin care products, allowing them to travel into the deeper layers of the skin and will also help prolong the life of your tan or natural fake tan!

What we recommend

There are many types of exfoliation, however we recommend simple Mechanical Exfoliation (use a brush, sponge or textured mitten or cloth) – highly recommended to help plump and tone your skin.  Use light circular motions with our sugar scrub.

Choose wisely and remember to check the ingredients in your scrubs! Naturally derived with certified organic ingredients is best and don’t overdo it. Remember, 3 times a week and no more!

Aequora’s latest skincare award and what we are doing for Earth Day 2020

Earth Day 2020

Let’s talk first of all about Earth Day and, let’s just say, I cannot think of a more important or apt time to discuss this considering the current situation we all find ourselves in now ,living amidst the fear and threat of COVID-19.

We are very proud to now be planting trees through our sales and donate to One Tree Planted .

WHY ARE TREES IMPORTANT TO THE ENVIRONMENT?

‘Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity.
Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.’

Australian Botanical Face Oil To Suit Every Skin Type – No More Break Outs.

Oily, Dry, Sensitive, Combination Skin?  Which are you?

You may be worried at the thought of using a face oil, especially if you’ve been using a face cream for years, like I used to!  Face oil wasn’t really a ‘thing’ when I was growing up (being a teen in the 80’s!).  So, I get it. Or maybe you’re a teenager now and struggling with the idea of putting oil on increasingly oily skin.  I understand it seems crazy- but let me assure you, it isn’t!  Our face oil suits even the most sensitive skin and I’ll explain to you here exactly the reasons why the highly potent ingredients contained in our Brightening & Restorative face oil  do exactly what it’s name suggests: brightening your skin and restoring it.

Did you know ….?

Whatever your reason has been, what you need to know is that face oil is extremely effective at treating your skin issues.  In addition you’ll notice gradually, that your skin will have a brighter and more glowing complexion.  And yes, every single skin type can use our Brightening & Restorative Face Oil.  So, to prove it to you (because I know you don’t all read your skincare labels, admit it)—and to give you no more excuses not to try oil on your face—I’ll explain simply our hero ingredients in our face oil and exactly how they will benefit your skin so you can achieve the ultimate glow.

Here’s what it does..

A good face oil can actually help to stabilise and balance your skin’s sebum balance (sebum being the natural oil your skin produces) and our face oil has astringent properties which can help remove the excess grease from your skin which makes for an overall less oily complexion. Our Brightening & Restorative Face Oil is a lightweight oil so you needn’t worry about feeling greasy either – it absorbs really easily.

So let’s kick off with those hero ingredients:

Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil)

One of our hero ingredients we included to help with acne prone skin is certified organic Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil). This is an incredibly lightweight oil which breaks down and dissolves excess sebum in your skin helping to control the shine.  It is rich in Vitamins E, A, D and Vitamin B complex and helps fight infections and fungi and mimics the skin’s natural oils.  Jojoba Oil penetrates deep into the skin’s layers. It is abundant in antioxidants and essential fatty acids – omegas 6 and 9 to help regenerate skin cells and repair damaged skin tissue.  Antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory – simply sensational!

Tamanu Oil (Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil)

We added certified organic Tamanu Oil to help combat dry skin.  The high-fat content of Tamanu Oil is extremely beneficial for people with dry skin as it helps maintain moisture in the skin without making the skin look greasy. It is gentle on the skin and won’t clog your pores.
Rosehip Oil  (Rosa Canina)

Rosehip Oilis an amazing oil for treating angry, acne prone skin!  It is rich in essential fatty acids and extremely high in Vitamin C. Because it is a dry oil, meaning it absorbs quickly without leaving an oily skin residue, it is well suited to normal to dry skin users.  It is deeply hydrating and the fatty acids it contains help fade scars and reduce any redness in the skin.

Macadamia Oil  (Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil)

Certified organic Macadamia Oil contains vitamin E which has many properties that may benefit your skin. For example, it absorbs easily, making it a good moisturiser for very dry skin.  It is a light weight oil high in monounsaturated fatty acids, including Oleic Acid (Omega 9), which are very moisturising, regenerating and softening on the skin.

Borage Oil (Borago officinalis seed oil)

Lastly, but in no means least, is another incredible super oil –  certified organic Borage OilBorage seed oil is fabulous for aiding skin disorders including eczema (atopic dermatitis), and a type of skin condition called neurodermatitis. It is really effective at treating the redness and inflammation.  Borage Oil is a little-known secret for keeping your skin healthy. It is a natural oil that not only restores moisture and smoothness to dry and damaged skin but can also provide relief to the skin disorders mentioned.

Are you normal?  Whatever normal is?

If you don’t really suffer from break outs, you don’t have super dry skin or particularly oily skin then you are amongst the few lucky people that fall into the normal skin category.  You know, the ones who always get the ‘your skin is always so perfect!’ remarks!  A top tip here if you are completely content with your current moisturiser is to add 2-3 drops of our Brightening & Restorative face oilinto your face cream.  This works incredibly well, lightening the cream so it absorbs beautifully.  Especially good when used in a night cream to allow all the goodness to seep into your skin whilst you sleep.

Well what are you waiting for?  Time to slather on some oil!

The Green Edit event – showcasing the very best in green beauty!

What an amazing day for green beauty brands!

On March 12th, we were thrilled to exhibit Aequora skincare at the first ever event held by The Green Edit in Sydney.  We were among forty two truly 100% natural green beauty brands that set up our tables at the beautifully chosen location at Terrace On The Domain.

The Green Edit event was hosted by green beauty make up artist and founder of The Green Edit, Cathy Tolpigin.  Cathy describes The Green Edit as a curated event featuring the very best organic and natural beauty brands in one beautiful space.  It also connects brand founders directly to consumers to build brand and product awareness, loyalty and to create a conscious community.

“I want natural beauty to be the norm, for absolutely everyone..” CATHY TOLPIGIN, FOUNDER OF THE GREEN EDIT

Well, the sun shone, the bubbles flowed and the people showed!  The atmosphere was wonderful.  Everyone enjoyed sampling the many beautiful products including make up, hair products, perfume, supplements and skin care – all natural, of course! There were talks and demonstrations and yoga on the green.

We had the pleasure of meeting like-minded beauty brands, buyers, media and PR and a host of consumers.  There were amazing goodie bags to take away absolutely packed to the brim with products, samples and exclusive discount offers.

I took my daughter down to help me on the stand.  What a huge help she was to me, especially chasing down my products that had been couriered interstate and hadn’t arrived in time!  But they eventually turned up and we managed to get our table looking lovely just in the nick of time!  The whole experience was an absolute pleasure and I personally cannot wait for this event next year.

How effective is hand washing for COVID-19?

We are currently being bombarded with information about hand washing and hand sanitising.  Never before has hand washing and hygiene been so important as it is now during these uncertain times, as we live through the current COVID-19 virus.

It was tempting for us to jump on the band wagon and manufacture our own hand sanitiser but we have chosen not to for several thought out reasons.  Firstly, for a hand sanitiser to be effective it needs to contain over 60% and ideally over 70% alcohol.  We have built our reputation on producing the highest quality natural skincare products and to introduce a natural hand sanitiser with alcohol would simply be introducing a semi-natural product and natural hand sanitisers that are truly natural  will obviously not be as effective as those containing alcohol.

So, instead, we thought we would focus on the importance of hand washing.

Cleaning hands at key times with a good quality hand wash / soap and water  is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those around you.

Handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs, pesticides, and metals on hands. Knowing when to clean your hands and which method to use will give you the best chance of preventing sickness.  Please follow these simple hand washing procedures as laid out by the World Health Organisation:

HHA_How_To_HandWash_Poster

So with all this additional hand washing and, certainly, if you are using an alcohol based sanitiser, your skin will be stripped of it’s natural oils and it will become even more necessary to moisturise to put that moisture back into those squeaky clean hands!  We have three invaluable products, all award winning, to safeguard against dry, flaking and sore hands.

Hydrating Hand & Body Wash  – here are just some of the hero ingredients we have included in it and why we recommend it: the certified organic Glycerin we use forms a protective layer that helps prevent moisture loss; Glyceryl Caprylate helps restore the natural oils in your skin ; Citrus Limon Peel Oil contains antibacterial and anti fungal properties; Macadamia Oil  – ah-mazing! Containing Palmitoleic acid to help soften dry skin: Palmarosa essential Oil is from the same family as Lemongrass and helps stimulate cellular regeneration and regulate sebum balance  (the natural oil in your skin).  It also contains our key native Australian botanical ingredients that we all know and love – Kakadu Plum, Lilly Pilly & Quandong which  are packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, anti ageing properties and antibacterial properties!

Body Moisturising Lotion – we have included an abundance of skin nourishing and restoring ingredients into this lotion including Cetearyl Olivate which helps reduce skin water loss, has a high moisturising effect and is hypoallergenic; The concentration of certified organic Shea Butter packed with vitamins is incredibly nourishing and moisturising for your skin and used to remedy dry skin and protect the skin’s natural oils; certified organic Jojoba Oil – fabulous for repairing damaged skin tissue it is antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral and anti inflammatory……wowsers!!!  Certified organic coconut oil is one of the ‘miracle ‘ oils as it is easily absorbed and provides deep skin hydration; certified organic sweet almond oil – soothes dry irritated skin……get the picture? We could go on and on! Did we mention that it’s also award winning? And did we mention it also contains our key Australian botanical ingredients? You know….Kakadu Plum, Lilly Pilly & Quandong….Love, love, love.

Intensely Moisturising Hand Cream – we don’t have a favourite, but you clearly do and this is our best selling product! You know what?  All of the above above ingredients in abundance!  This is a truly sensational hand cream and the reviews keep pouring in which we are always thrilled to receive.  This hand cream is especially suited to very sensitive skin and eczema prone skin.  Gentle and mild enough not to irritate…..potent enough to deliver the necessary healing properties to soothe dry, sore and dehydrated skin.  This cream is easily absorbed which we just love – personally, I am not a fan of hand creams that sit on your skin and leave it greasy. Nup! Not this hand cream – beautifully smooth and it does what is says – goes straight in!  That means all those amazing skin nourishing ingredients are being absorbed straight away.

So, amidst all this confusion, panic and worry during these uncertain times that we are all experiencing, I wanted to send you all my very best wishes.  I hope you all stay safe and healthy and let’s try to make the most of this time to focus on self care, family  and what really matters in life.

Thinking of you all.

Body Lotion CC Award

CertClean Awards 2020 – we’re Finalists!

We wanted to share some more amazing news with you that has just been announced!  We are finalists in this year’s Clean Beauty Awards which celebrate the very best performing products, created with the healthiest ingredients, from around the world. Its goal is to celebrate the power of the clean, or “free from”, beauty movement through this annual Awards, hosted by CertClean and supported by an eminent panel of judges.

Aequora entered two products from our Australian Botanical Range : our Intensely Moisturising Hand Cream and our Body Moisturising Lotion and we are extremely proud to announce that both products have been selected as finalists in this year’s awards!

CertClean is North America’s leading certification for safer beauty and personal care products – that’s right – Aequora has been recognised globally now having won awards now in Australia, UK and Canada!

So why did we enter these awards?

Here’s the reason why it’s important for us to enter these awards as explained on the CertClean website:

There’s a growing awareness that large companies use questionable ingredients, such as talc and parabens. So shoppers turn to brands that use marketing buzzwords like “natural” and “organic.” And they rightfully assume they’re protecting themselves from harm! But in Canada, if just one chemical in a cosmetic is natural or organic, the product is legally allowed to be marketed as entirely natural or organic. So how can shoppers avoid questionable chemicals in their everyday beauty products?

At the same time, countless brands rise above the status quo to craft products void of questionable chemicals. However, the journey to success — even for the best amongst them — is an uphill struggle. Why? How can brands that don’t use harmful chemicals get recognized for their superior formulations?

With clean beauty products proudly bearing the CertClean logo, it is now possible for shoppers to confidently and easily discover safer beauty and personal care products. At the same time, the clean beauty products now get the authentication and distinction they deserve.

CertClean vets beauty and personal care products formulated without the use of potentially harmful ingredients, such as carcinogens, chemicals that may potentially affect our hormonal system, reproductive system, neurological system, etc.

CertClean is not a certification for products with a certain quantity of natural or organic ingredients but a certification for products free from ingredients that may pose risk to our hormonal, reproductive and or neurological systems, like talcum powder, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, and hundreds more.  CertClean is a certification which prioritises human health over the use of organic and natural ingredients.

Clean beauty: what we call products formulated without questionable ingredients!

Dehydrated or dry skin? Is there a difference?

So how do you know if you have dehydrated or dry skin (yes, there is a difference) and what can you do about it?

If you suffer with a flaky, itchy or a lack-lustre complexion and wrinkles seem to be appearing at an alarming rate – do you put it down to your skin being dehydrated or do you assume you have dry skin?  So many different factors can affect the condition of your skin.  Even the weather can affect the condition of your skin, however, there are also other factors that can contribute to dehydrated or dry skin conditions including pollution, diet, caffeine, health issues, medication, and alcohol.  It could even be something as simple as you’re not drinking enough water.  Dry skin and dehydrated skin are quite different even though the symptoms can look and feel very similar.

MOISTURISED SKIN OR  HYDRATED SKIN?

Aequora skincare products contain hydrating ingredients and are formulated to increase the amount of water in your skin’s cells, which helps promote a healthy, smooth, and supple complexion. It’s important to ensure your skin is hydrated before you can add moisture. Did you know that your skin contains 64% water?

When we consider moisturising our skin it’s good to understand the natural oils (sebum) in your skin that work to protect and nourish it.  It’s important to have a balance to prevent excessive dryness and help fight against premature ageing.

Following a good skin care routine is an effective way of locking in moisture into our skin.  For example, it’s important to apply a lighter serum (as serums are water based for hydration) before a heavier moisturiser or face oil in an effort to lock in both hydration and moisture. We recommend using our Pure Hydrating & Brightening Serum before applying our Brightening & Restorative Face Oil.

DRY SKIN

Dry skin lacks oil and is generally  due to a  genetic or  hormonal imbalance which inhibits your skin’s sebum production. When you reach the 40 plus age range over 50% of adults suffer from dry skin, so you’re definitely more susceptible to having dry skin as you get older.  The sad news is that dry skin cannot be reversed, but you can apply products containing nourishing plant oils such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil and jojoba oil, as well as essential oils like lavender and frankincense, all of which are great for dry skin and are feature in our range of Australian Botanical skincare.

THE TELL-TALE SIGNS OF DRY SKIN

  • Flaking, scaling, or peeling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Skin feels tight—especially after bathing/showering
  • Irritation
  • Fine lines or possibly cracks
  • Rough texture

DEHYDRATED SKIN

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition that can be controlled although the natural ageing process is a battle we all have to fight.  A healthy diet and lifestyle can improve the appearance of dehydrated skin but equally important is maintaining a thorough skin care routine.

SIGNS OF DEHYDRATED SKIN

  • Dull and feels tight
  • Itchiness
  • Dullness
  • Darker circles or shadows around the eyes
  • Increased appearance of fine lines and surface wrinkles

Dehydration happens when the body loses too much water.  Remember to consume on average eight glasses or around 2 litres of water daily.

At Aequora, we take skincare seriously but we don’t like to take life too seriously, so when we list the top tips for keeping skin hydrated, we not only reckon much of this comes down to common knowledge but we also like to think that you have to live a little also!

So, here’s the tips for keeping your skin hydrated:

DRINK LESS ALCOHOL (IF AT ALL) – OK, tricky (let me tell you, I know!)

DRINK LESS COFFEE (virtually impossible also!)

STOP SMOKING ( seriously, who smokes these days?)

STAY HYDRATED DURING YOUR WORKOUT (Note to self – must work out more often!)

GET PLENTY OF SLEEP ( I’m good at this one!)

EAT MORE PLANT-BASED FOODS ( yep – eat your greens!)

USE THE CORRECT SKINCARE

Even if you’re following a healthy lifestyle, you still need to put into practice a good skin care routine.

Along with nourishing plant extracts and essential oils, look for products that contain hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and plant/flower extracts to provide moisture. Choose a moisturiser that hydrates your skin without being too heavy—a thick, heavy formula can actually make your skin break out without actually treating the problem at hand.  Our Body Moisturising Lotion is an easily absorbed all-over body moisturiser suitable for all skin types.

Even if you treat yourself to regular facials, it’s what you do on a daily basis that really counts.

Remember, dehydrated skin lacks water—not oil. The good news is that unlike dry skin that’s categorised as a challenging skin type, a dehydrated complexion is manageable because you only need to make lifestyle changes to improve it.

Our products are all formulated to keep your skin perfectly hydrated and moisturised.  Shop our range of 100% natural Australian Botanical skincare at https://aequora.com.au/shop-aequora/

What is a serum?

Introducing our new Pure Hydrating and Brightening Serumstaying true to our brand it is 100% natural, vegan friendly, non-toxic and we are also proud to announce all our products are now licensed by the Australian Made campaign and certified by Safe Cosmetics Australia.

‘I have had so many requests for more facial products and I knew straight away that the undeniably best facial product would be a serum.’ Lisa says.

But why use a face serum and actually, what is a serum?

There are so many serums on the market now and it can be really confusing.  But learning is actually fun, so I thought we’d let you know a little about our new Pure Hydrating and Brightening Serum.

Serums should actually be your go-to product when it comes to facial skincare.  They come in many different consistencies but are generally lighter than a cream or oil.  They are formulated to penetrate deeper into the skin to deliver specific results and are also intended for daily use –  I use this serum morning and night and follow it up with our new Brightening and Restorative Face Oil.  Being lighter in weight allows the serum to penetrate the skin better and address the areas that need correcting such as pigmentation, acne, dark spots or dryness.

A serum is applied after cleansing and before moisturising with the intent to deliver a potent shot of ingredients directly into your skin.

Our antioxidant facial serum is suitable for all skin types and with our Australian Botanical curated infusion of Native Australian Kakadu Plum, Lilly Pilly and Quandong, this potent antioxidant elixir deeply sinks in to hydrate and smooth your skin creating a radiant glow.

It is luxurious and lightweight and can be used on it’s own or provides a super base for our new antioxidant face oil.

Firstly, I wanted to let you know a little bit about one of the star key ingredients I decided to combine into our Pure Hydrating and Brightening Serum.

If your skin goals include keeping hydrated, plumper and firmer skin, then including hyaluronic acid (HA) into your skin care routine is essential.  The good news is this serum has this hydrating superstar in abundance.  Hyaluronic Acid will help transform your skin from dull and lacklustre to luminous and glowing by restoring the natural moisture barrier.  It is an amazing and naturally occurring molecule that boosts your body’s ability to produce collagen helping you achieve healthy and radiant skin from the inside out.

So, what else makes this a super serum?  Well we have literally packed it full of the highest quality ingredients known for enhancing your skin.  Aloe Vera, Apricot Kernel Oil, Evening Primrose Oil and Olive Squalene.  All these ingredients along with our signature Australian Native Botanical extracts of Kakadu Plum, Lilly Pilly and Quandong are antioxidant rich and contain powerful skin boosting vitamins C, B5 and B3.

In a nutshell, our Pure Hydrating and Brightening Serumwill help balance, hydrate and brighten your skin to feel more nourished, smooth and radiant looking.

On a personal note – I cannot live without this product now!

Exciting times! New products, new look!

I have been flat chat for the past few months researching and developing two new products to add to the Aequora range of natural skincare and I’m thrilled to be able to show you a sneak preview of the mock ups we have produced in the lead up to launching our new ‘Brightening & Restorative Face Oil’ and ‘Pure Hydrating & Brightening Serum’.

I cannot tell you how excited I am that we are nearly ready to launch! It has been months of painstaking work deciding which would be the very best combination of ingredients to include in these products to produce the ultimate natural skincare for your face. We believe we have succeeded!

As always, we stay true to our brand. When you buy Aequora skincare you can buy with confidence knowing that all our products are 100% natural with only natural preservatives ( we don’t like preservatives derived from petroleum). Also, all of our products have been certified Vegan friendly, Cruelty Free and we are also certified Australian Made! Our focus will always be providing the very best Australian Botanical skincare for you.

In the next few blogs I shall be highlighting some of the amazing ingredients in our new Face Oil & Serum and advising you on the huge benefits these products have for your skin but firstly we need to let you know about our new look!

At Aequora, it must be said, we love our grey! However, we felt we needed a little ‘face lift’ – in a natural way! So, we are rebranding slightly and dividing our Face care and Body care into two categories. Our Face care will be softened with a nude pink and our Body care will also have a slightly softer appeal, keeping our beloved grey but adding our new nude pink (because we just love these two colours together!). We have received really positive reviews via our Instagram and Facebook pages, so we are confident we have made the right choice.

We have also decided to have our award winning hand cream in it’s own box. We resisted additional packaging for a long time but after much thought and looking forward it seems this is the best decision and we are happy to report, of course it is recyclable!

So, make sure you stay subscribed as pre ordering will be starting very soon. There will be an amazing FREE gift which will be a limited offer for the first 50 orders to be announced very soon via our website. Let your friends know and get them to subscribe so they don’t miss out!

Benefits of vegan skincare for senior citizens

Our bodies go through massive changes. As we get older, we can see it the most on our skin. It gets thinner, it loses fat, and it does not look as taut and smooth as it once used to. Simple wounds and scratches take longer to heal—our skin becomes more fragile as time goes by.

Since the skin covers almost our entire body surface and considered to be the largest human organ, it is imperative that you know how to take care of it well—especially on vulnerable ageing skin.

Why should you practice vegan skincare?

There are many ways you can take care of your skin to keep it healthy and well for a long period of time. These include:

. Gently washing your skin every morning

. Washing it again right before you go to sleep

. Keeping your skin hydrated by regularly moisturising it

. Staying out of direct sunlight for long periods of time

. By eating a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Another way is by using skincare products that can greatly benefit your skincare regimen. However, when it comes to the best skincare product, you must still be wary about the ingredients they contain. Now, most professionals and experts can agree that the fewer chemicals a skincare product has, the better it is for your overall health.

A lot of skincare products in the market today are promoted to produce the best results in the shortest period of time; however, this is never truly the case. The best skincare routines take time, effort, and discipline, however, using the right products can definitely enhance and improve things along the way.

To ensure that your skin is getting the best treatment, it is best to use all-natural, chemical-free, vegan products. Products from brands such as Aequora contain only the best ingredients from nature, so you can assure that you are not applying any questionable substance on your most visible asset.

Some of the most common issues of ageing skin include dryness and itchiness, easy bruising, wrinkles, and age spots and skin tags. Although these are inevitable as you get older, certain natural and organic ingredients can help in reducing it or even preventing it from worsening—and Aequora creates some of the best.

Here are a few of our most used ingredients:

1. Citric Acid

This ingredient is known to have multiple benefits for the body; however, it is also well known to treat several skin problems such as wrinkles and age spots. Citric Acid can be naturally found in citric fruits such as lemons and oranges, but they can also be found in our face mists.

2. Citric Lemon Peel Oil

Lemon oil can increase the lustre of dull skin. It is also widely known to be the best antibacterial and antifungal ingredient. On top of that, you can benefit from its distinct cleansing and deodorising characteristics. This ingredient can be extracted from the best ethically sourced lemons to create body scrubs, moisturizers, and lotions.

3. Certified Organic Macademia Integrifolia Seed Oil (Macadamia)

Older skin takes a longer time to renew and heal itself, but ingredients such as Macadamia can help ease that. The Macademia Integrifolia Seed Oil is known to be a regenerative oil that contains Palmitoleic Acid to soften the skin along with omegas 3 and 6 fatty acids. This is best used for scars and sunburns, which is why it is the main ingredient in our award-winning Hydrating Hand and Body Wash.

Aequora products only ever use natural and certified organic ingredients, so you are sure that everything you use is free from all harming chemicals including Parabens, Petrochemicals, Phtalates, Propylene Glycol, Mineral Oil, SLS, Synthetic Fragrance and Artificial Colour.

There is no simple way to keep your skin healthy and well. In fact, it will take years of nurturing and practicing healthy habits to ensure that your skin does not suffer in your senior years. However, proper andethical skincare can do a blatant difference. By using products that are natural and sustainable, your skin will definitely thank you.

‘Why is animal testing unethical?’

Animal testing remains to be the most common procedure when it comes to experimental drugs and products. Researchers have worked on laboratory animals to test for a possible cure for certain diseases and to verify the efficacy of products.

In the past few decades, we have discovered many treatments for deadly diseases by using animals. No wonder animal laboratory testing is still prevalent and is expected to carry on within the next few years.

However, the controversy regarding animal testing remains a subject of heated discussion. A lot of organisations are fighting for the abolition of animal testing as they claim it to be unethical and unnecessary. But why?

What do we mean by animal testing and why does it happen?

Animal testing, also considered animal research or experimentation, involves lab animals that are controlled to achieve a state that is favorable to the variable being tested. This can lead to animal harm or potentially induce death at the end of the experiment.

Since human trials can compromise the health and safety of people, researchers rely heavily on experimental animals to conduct biological research as well as drug and product testing. The analysis of vaccines is eminently associated with lab animals to make sure it can cure diseases and will not cause any side effects.

Moreover, thousands of drug companies prove the efficacy of their brand through animal research. The results from such experiments pave the way for a breakthrough in the pharmaceutical industry. With the continuous search for a cure for terminal diseases and the extensive use of drugs and cosmetic products around the world, it is indeed a multimillion dollar industry.

How common is it?

Reports claim that over 100 million animals of various species are subjected to animal experimentation annually. In Australia, more than six million animals are being used in biological and medical research as well as drug and product testing each year. Statistical data showed that in 2016, Australia had utilised more than 11 million animals for experiments and researches.

The most common lab animals are mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, and frogs. Dogs, cats, fish, and monkeys are also used for some research trials.

These animals are often being subjected to one of the following:

Biological research

This type of testing involves research facilities in universities and other institutions and is considered to be the most common practice that uses animals for research. It is responsible for validating theories and hypotheses based on the data gathered from animal testing. Its aim is to understand the biological and physiological effects of variables being applied to animals.

Regulation testing

Testing for regulation heavily involves the drugs, vaccines, and products from commercial pharmaceutical companies. Animal testing is done to ensure that the particular substance being studied doesn’t have harmful side effects and is effective to use for humans.

The drug or substance being tested is either consumed orally, applied or injected to the lab animal and then monitored for its effects. It can take weeks to months or even years, depending on the reliability of data gathered.

There are hundreds of widely-known line of products that are still paying for tests on animals, including:

•    Victoria’s Secret

•    L’Oreal

•    Avon

•    Clinique

•    Maybelline

•    Revlon

•    Chanel

•    Sephora Brand

•    Johnson & Johnson

•    Unilever

Why is it bad?

When animals are used for testing, they are usually subjected to harm and pain that leave them helpless. Some of the most common procedures done on animals include exposure to toxic substances or radiation, forced consumption of experimental substances, induced development of fatal diseases and the use of internal organs for further study.

A lot of organisations, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), claim that all of these procedures are cruel and unethical. They deem it unnecessary and unreliable due to the following reasons:

9 out of 10 drugs tested on animals fail in clinical research.

Researchers try to artificially develop the disease in animals and induce the symptoms for the drug to be tested. However, the formation of the disease in animals is very much different from that of humans, making the drug effective for animals but ineffective for humans. Some of the diseases they are trying to cure for decades now are diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and AIDS.

It’s a waste of time and resources.

Drug developers have been trying to produce viable products for the past couple of decades, but only a few get approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The industry invests billions of dollars for years, only to get insignificant results. The cure for cancer in mice had already been discovered decades ago, but there is still no progress for humans.

What are the alternative methods?

Since PETA is determined to abolish animal testing, it funds several advancements to become possible alternatives to using animals. As of today, there are already research methods that laboratories use. These include:

Human volunteers

Humans are being studied with the process of introducing a small dose of a drug, which is known as microdosing. From this, advanced monitoring techniques are applied to study the effect of a drug. This alternative doesn’t use a single lab animal and can rule out ineffective products immediately.

In vivo testing

Researchers have found a way to create an organ-like copy of the human organ system through the use of chips. This breakthrough paved the way for more accurate and precise drug and product testing since it is being tested on actual human cells. The nature of diseases and the physiology of the body is better understood with this alternative.

Some cruelty-free products we highly recommend

As mentioned above, some well-known cosmetic and skincare brands are heavily involved in animal testing. However, there are a few lines of products that are 100% natural and not tested on animals, like Aequora.

Our skincare brand prides itself on cruelty-free products. We highly recommend that you try the following natural and organic Aequora line:

Exfoliating Body Scrub

This award-winning product is made of botanical extracts that gently exfoliates dead skin cells to reveal younger and healthier skin. It is free of harmful chemicals and is vegan-friendly.

Hydrating Facial Mist

This plant-based hydrating facial mist keeps your face fresh and hydrated. It is packed with antioxidants and essential oils that all play a role in keeping the skin moisturised and free of age spots.

Hydrating Hand and Body Wash

Total hydration of the skin is easily achieved with this hand and body wash as it leaves your skin cleansed and rejuvenated after every use. This plant-based product doesn’t contain chemicals and is not tested on animals.

Conclusion

If animal testing is totally abolished, it would make way for new alternatives to dominate the research and product regulation industry. This can also mean taking down the biggest cosmetic and skincare brands on the market that are still involved in animal testing. With that said, it’s best to shift to vegan-friendly products as early as now.

Your skincare products don’t have to be cruel, so invest in plant-based ones for a safer and more ethical way of living!

Body Scrubs and why we love a Sugar Scrub

Our luxurious sugar scrub isn’t just a fabulous indulgence when you
scoop out a fresh and zesty handful!

Unlike many other body scrubs, our Australian Botanicals Body Scrub only contains natural and certified organic ingredients to nourish your skin.  It helps unclog pores to produce a smooth looking and more radiant skin.

As you know there are so many factors which affect the condition of our
skin including diet and the environment.

Exfoliating once or twice a week helps to remove dead surface skin cells
that give you that flaky, dull, lack lustre skin.  The gently abrasive granules also help to
unclog your pores from the build-up of the skin’s natural oils as well.

We chose to include a Sugar Scrub in our range of Australian Botanical
skincare as it is suitable for mature, delicate and sensitive skin – so, a good
all-rounder.  This is due to the fact
that sugar obviously dissolves away upon contact with water so it doesn’t feel
too harsh on your skin.

Sugar is also a humectant – this means it attracts and retains moisture
and increases the solubility of active ingredients enabling them to penetrate
the skin.  Combine this with an abundance
of skin loving oils and your skin will be left hydrated, moisturised and
positively glowing!

Another little fact is that unclogged pores can retain more moisture – so, time to give your body that weekly treat and exfoliate away!

The ideal finish to stepping out of your shower with your smooth and glowing skin is to moisturise with our Australian Botanical Body Moisturising Lotion which will lock in that moisture to keep your skin hydrated for longer.

Face Mist……what is it exactly? We explain how to use our Hydrating Facial Mist and why it should be your ‘must have’ item

Easy to mistake face mist for just water in a bottle to
freshen you up on a hot day! A face mist isn’t something that only the ‘beauty
elite’ carry around – it should be an important part of your daily skincare
routine.

A face spray is a water based product for sure, but there’s also a lot of amazing ingredients that are incredibly beneficial for your skin. Our Hydrating Facial Mist is suited to all skin types: dry, dehydrated skin or even oily skin and is great at soothing irritated skin due to many of the ingredients containing anti-inflammatory properties.

We highlight 3 amazing ingredients included in our Australian Botanical Hydrating Facial Mist bottle: Aloe Vera, Green Tea & Vitamin E.  These ingredients alone boast a whole host of incredible properties.

Aloe
Vera
is a fabulous skin conditioning agent.  It helps balance the skin’s water content and
helps improve skin elasticity.

Green Tea
is naturally rich in antioxidants which have a
cell-protecting function as well. It is the strong antioxidant effect
that protects the skin from the damaging effect of free radicals.

Vitamin E – this we all know – is a powerful antioxidant as well that may be effective at reducing UV damage in skin. It is also very nourishing and like Green Tea, also protects your skin from damage caused by free radicals.

When to use:

During your morning
& evening skincare routine

Whether your skin is dry
or oily, it needs to be kept hydrated.  During
your morning and evening skincare routine, spray a little mist
on your face and after a few seconds gently pat it with a cotton pad or tissue
paper to prevent it from evaporating.

Using our facial mist just before you moisturise your skin will keep the hydration locked in and leave your face feeling supple.  Our Hydrating Facial Mist is also a great replacement for your toner as many toners tend to dry out the face.

A few ‘did you know’
facts:

You can add our face mist to help dilute face creams with
a thicker consistency.  This will help
them be applied to your skin more easily.

If you give your face a light spritz with our face mist
after applying your make up it not only helps set the make-up but also you will
achieve that fresh, dewy look.

Spray on a little mist any time during the day to feel
fresh and rejuvenated.

New Year – New goals for your hard working hands

It’s true – we spend so much time worrying about the wrinkles, lines and blotches on our face, that we forget about noticing our hands and here’s a fact: our hands often show the first signs of ageing!

Here’s why…. our hands are exposed practically 24/7 and at greater risk of damage caused by sun exposure as the skin on the back of our hands is thinner than the skin on our face.  So, we really should be looking to use a good hand cream to help prevent the age spots and wrinkles that will appear quickly if our hands are lacking in moisture.

When washing your hands, we recommend using our Cleansing Soap Bar or our Hydrating Hand & Body Wash from our Australian Botanicals range, as these products are gentle and hydrating and won’t dry your skin out like many hand washes and sanitisers containing synthetic ingredients and chemicals which will strip the natural oils from your hands and dry them out.

After washing your hands, it is always a good idea to apply a hand cream to lock in that moisture.  Our Australian Botanicals Intensely Moisturising Hand Cream has been highly commended in this year’s Natural Beauty Awards 2019 by Nature & Health Magazine and contains wonderfully rich, hydrating ingredients including shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil and avocado oil.

All our products are 100% natural and contain certified organic ingredients and the amazing properties that these ingredients contain get absorbed by your skin rather than just sitting on the surface of your skin as products containing petroleum, mineral oil and silicones will.

Another fact is that our Intensely Moisturising Hand Cream is also quite versatile and can be used on your face too as a rich moisturiser!!!  One of our happy customers recently posted on Instagram saying it’s one of the only creams that she will use on her face due to an intolerance she has to lots of ingredients used in other products.  We are so pleased that we can safely say our products are suitable for all skin types even the highly sensitive ones and that is due to the high quality natural ingredients we source.

So, one of your New Year resolutions ought to include sparing a thought for those hard-working hands and looking after them!  Give them the care and attention they deserve and as we all begin to age, or if you already have mature skin, let them keep guessing at your age – hands can be a real giveaway of a person’s age you know!

Aequora-Self-Belief

Self belief…..what you need to know

‘Don’t ever let anyone make you feel like you don’t deserve to live the life of your dreams. Don’t ever let anyone make you doubt yourself.’

This is what I had to remind myself of when I told a friend I was studying organic skincare and essential oils with a view to formulating my own range of products. “Don’t be ridiculous” she said “what do you know about that? You’ll probably burn someone’s face off and get sued”. Not quite the encouragement I was hoping for.

But I had my self-belief that if I studied and gained the relevant qualifications and surrounded myself with the right professional people, it was absolutely possible. I like to think of it as Karma when you can prove them wrong too!

I also realised it was her ignorance that threw out those disparaging remarks – you’re not going to burn someone’s face off with natural and organic ingredients. I explained to her that it was chemicals that would cause burns and my skincare would be chemical and toxin free, but she didn’t get it really. That brought another element to my journey which would be to inform people that simply pull ‘cheap’ or shall we say ‘cost effective’ skincare items off the shelf that they really should start having a look at what ingredients are on the labels and gain even a basic knowledge of the ‘nasties’ – those toxic ingredients we should all avoid.

If you have a passion and a dream, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve it – have the confidence and determination to succeed.
That’s not to say there’s not a lot of hard work ahead to achieve your goals. Lots of studying, which actually is fun when you’re interested in the subject. I keep reminding my teenage daughter of this – once you are actually studying a subject you enjoy, it doesn’t feel like a chore. You actually feel you want to absorb more and more information. Yes, there will be lots of steep learning curves and honestly, quite a few hurdles and mistakes along the way. But we learn from our failures and mistakes – that’s how we go from strength to strength. I remember my parents passing this information on to me and now I’m passing it on to my own daughter.

Have the courage to do what you are passionate about – follow your dreams and live the life you dream of – because you can achieve it over time. I’m a Mum, after all – which means I’m pretty much a super hero!

“When you have a dream, you will have doubters.

These gleeful killjoys shoot us down before we take off. They say “you can’t” when we thought we can. They make us hesitant when we were sure, silly when we were smart.

External doubt feeds self-doubt; the number one dream-killer as shown in studies. Life and success aren’t about what happens to you, it’s about how you perceive and respond to what happens to you. And doubters happen. They happen fast and hard on your unsuspecting dream.

Be ready for them. Better yet, benefit from them. Because, as unthinkable as that sounds, you can.”

Body Lotion Vs Body Oil

What’s the difference? What’s best for my skin?

There is so much out in the market to choose from isn’t there? Which is best though and how do you know what ‘s best for your skin? It can be so confusing. It needn’t be though – just a basic knowledge will suffice really and knowing your own skin.

There will always be the latest crazes and fads in skincare but at the end of the day we all know there is no miracle cream or oil that will turn back time and make us all flawless.

There is however, good, simple skincare that is non-toxic and contains high quality ingredients that nourish and hydrate our skin which is key to healthy looking skin.

So, firstly, assess your skin and get to know what level of hydration your skin requires.

Secondly, understand the difference between a Body Lotion and a Body Oil. They both moisturise your skin but the difference is how they are absorbed. Basically, a Body Lotion penetrates the skin – it gets absorbed and active ingredients like Vitamin E etc. get to work in soothing and hydrating the upper layers of the skin. Lotions, like our Australian Botanicals Body Moisturising Lotion contain a blend of water, oil and emulsifying agents (a waxy substance). Our Body Lotion is thicker than body oils and can be applied directly onto your skin.

Body oils are made with a primary oil and, surprisingly, do not leave you feeling greasy and they do quickly absorb into your skin. Oils nourish the outer protective barrier of your skin and are particularly suited to dry skin due to their potency.

A Body Lotion, such as our Australian Botanicals Moisturising Body Lotion, contain an abundance of additional skin loving ingredients such as Shea Butter, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil and due to their formulation also have a fabulous aroma provided by the essential oils blend that is used.

Body Lotions and Body Oils can provide skin firming and toning benefits and both nourish the skin. Oils are beneficial for stretch marks and acne prone and troublesome skin due to their potency again.

It’s always a good idea to try both when you’re unsure. Did you know you can also add some drops of Body Oil to your Body Lotion for an extra boost of skin hydration?

My personal preference is to use a Body Lotion but I must admit that for my face I have now swapped to a Face Oil which I highly recommend after years of using a face cream. Again, it’s all about knowing what is best for your individual skin type.

And lastly, please remember to buy cruelty free skincare.

Happy moisturising!
